About KHI Services

KHI Services, Inc. is a non-profit organization, founded in 1971, originally with the intention of serving runaway boys from Montgomery County. After a relatively short period of time it became apparent to the board that the population really needing service was boys with serious behavioral problems who were unsuccessful in other placements or unable to remain in their homes.

Over the years KHI Services, Inc. has operated a variety of programs, including group homes for girls and a state owned program in Carroll County. Currently the company operates two residential programs and three outpatient clinics. While we are always interested in expanding our services we do so with the intent of keeping to our company's original purpose - to serve youth and their families and other adults in a therapeutic environment.

The "Karma Philosophy" has always maintained that successful interventions with youth must involve parents/guardians in each step of the process. In this way the family is better prepared to address the issues/problems/questions that invariably arise after a youth returns home. Our program therapists work closely with parents to prepare them and their child for permanent reunification.

Our Funding

Our programs are funded through government contracts, third party reimbursements, client payments, grants and donations. Karma Academy for Boys and Karma at Randallstown is licensed and funded through a contract with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) These programs also operate under a contract with the Department of Human Resources (Department of Social Services) to provide our residential services.

The Step Ahead Program is funded, in part, from a contract with Montgomery County, Maryland to provide our adolescent substance abuse counseling and educational services. This program is also funded through client’s health insurance reimbursement and client fees.

The Adult Substance Abuse program is fully funded by client payments for services.

We seek financial support from foundations and other private entities offering funding for special programs. These organizations supplement our programs. Currently and in the past we have received financial support from The Weinberg Foundation, The Mead Foundation, IBM Employees, Saint Mark Presbyterian Church and the Montgomery County Collaboration Council. We sincerely thank and appreciate all these foundations, companies and individuals for their tremendous support.
