Outpatient Services

KHI Services, Inc. operates three outpatient substance abuse programs in Montgomery County, serving youth and adults with dependence or addiction to alcohol and other mood altering drugs. The adolescent programs opened in the spring of 2001, following our successful response to a request for proposal from Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Later that year the adult program opened, although it does not operate under any contractual arrangements.

These programs are certified by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Licensed therapists or certified counselors conduct the group and individual sessions and develop and implement the Individual Treatment Plans for each person entering the program.

Step Ahead Program

The Step Ahead Program serves approximately 50 youth in outpatient substance abuse counseling groups and individual and family sessions in a six month program. One hour counseling sessions are conducted on Monday and Thursday evenings at 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm, 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm. Educational sessions are conducted on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Six educational sessions are required during the first 45 days in the program.

The Step Ahead Program is designed to educate and develop personal insight into the detrimental impact that drugs and alcohol has on a person, especially a youth who has not fully developed the physical and mental aspects of their lives.

In addition to the counseling and educational sessions indicated above the therapists also conduct, at a minimum, a 45-day review session, a 90-day re-assessment and a pre-discharge meeting, another individual session at approximately one month prior to discharge and a discharge meeting. These family/ individual sessions are intended to develop/change/restructure the individual plan developed during the initial assessment.

Additional individual sessions are conducted when a youth submits a positive urinalysis. All clients are expected to submit an observed urine sample at each session, unless otherwise indicated.

Currently the Step Ahead Program accepts the following insurances: Amerigroup, BlueCross BlueShield, United Behavioral Health, Aetna, Medicaid, Johns Hopkins Physicians Care, ASP and Maryland Physicians Care. We are currently in contract negotiations with Kaiser Permanente.

If your insurance company is not listed here we will work with you to develop a payment plan that works for you and KHI Services, Inc.

Drug and Alcohol Education Series – Nine hours (DAES9)

The DAES9 educational seminars are conducted on Wednesday afternoons from 5:15 pm to 6:45 pm. The series includes eight separate education programs, of which six must be attended by each client. The program consists of viewing videos on topics related to the use/abuse of drugs/alcohol/cigarettes, completing worksheets and other documents related to the video and brief discussion about the topic presented.

All clients of the DAES9 program must submit an observed urine sample for testing by the Montgomery County lab. Results are shared with youth. If a youth has a positive test result they are scheduled for an assessment and admission into the six-month outpatient program.
