The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) serves youth between the ages of 12-18 with more serious drug and/or alcohol involvement. Youth entering this program usually have previous unsuccessful attempts at drug and alcohol rehabilitation. They may also be entering the program on a step-down basis from an inpatient substance abuse treatment program.

The IOP meets on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The program is divided into three one hour segments; the first hour involves a more traditional therapeutic group session, followed by an educational seminar, and an hour of experiential activity.

Youth receive an hour of individual/family therapy every other week, along with an hour of case management services. These sessions concentrate on the person’s specific issues and his/her needs to reconnect with the family and/or resolve specific issues outlined in the person’s Individual Treatment Plan (ITP).

The ITP is developed during the initial assessment which is conducted by one of our licensed/certified therapists. The assessment takes up to 2 hours. Youth should bring identification (usually a driver’s license) to the assessment as well as open-mindedness to answer the questions posed by the assigned therapist.

This program is funded through medical assistance (Medicaid) and select health insurances. We currently accept Blue Cross/Blue Shield for all the national capital areas, Aetna, United, ValueOptions and all the Maryland Health Choice companies serving the Montgomery County area.

Most referrals come through the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services SASCA unit. However, referrals may be made directly through the school or from family in need of this level of service.

Assessments are scheduled within seven days of receipt of referral, or at the earliest possible convenience of the family, within the available schedule of our assessing therapists. Be prepared to spend about two hours with us for the initial assessment. We have plenty of magazines for you to read and enjoy while you wait. A portion of the assessment involves a parent or guardian so be prepared to spend some time with the therapist as well.
