The DAES9 educational seminars are conducted on Wednesday afternoons for adolescents referred from SASCA or for people who would like their son or daughter to learn more about the affects and effects of drugs and alcohol. The primary group begins at 5:15 pm, and endis at 6:45 pm and if that group is full another begins at 5:00 pm, and ends at 6:30 pm.
The series includes twelve education programs, of which six must be attended by each client. The seminar topics are listed in the sidebar to the right. The program consists of viewing videos on topics related to the use/abuse of drugs/alcohol/cigarettes, completing worksheets related to the video and participation in discussions about the topic presented.
Each seminar also includes a brief session related to communicable diseases and their relationship to drugs and alcohol (hepatitis, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted illnesses). These topics are mandated by the state of Maryland, and they are vital in understanding the overall impact that drugs and alcohol have on any individual.
All clients of the DAES9 program must submit an observed urine sample for testing each session they attend. The Montgomery County lab tests the results which are shared with youth and their parents/ guardian. If a youth has a positive U/A test result or misses a class unexcused they are scheduled for an assessment and possible admission into the six-month outpatient program or the IOP.
